Copenhagen’s Vikingbus orders 45 MAN Lion’s City 12 E electric buses

Danish transport operator Vikingbus has ordered 45 MAN Lion’s City 12 E buses for the Denmark capital’s public transport service. The newly ordered buses are expected to be deployed in Spring 2023. Another coach company, Anchersen, already operates 25 MAN Lion’s City 12 E buses on Copenhagen’s central bus route 7A, which carries more than… Read more »

KAUST discovers inorganic 3D foam that may improve anode performance

KAUST, a Saudi Arabian private research university, says that lithium batteries may soon enjoy enhanced efficiency, thanks to a highly ordered foam of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) that it has discovered.  KAUST reports that the complex hierarchical structure of the self-assembling foam allows it to easily and repeatedly soak up and then release large quantities of… Read more »

Sniffing out the specs of the Tesla Semi

Automakers differ widely in how forthcoming they are with technical specs. When one German automaker released its first major EV model, it hosted a press event at which cutaway versions of battery packs and electric motors were on display, and the engineers who designed them were on hand to answer questions. In contrast, another Teutonic… Read more »

NEO announces plans to integrate recycled silicon into silicon anode materials

NEO, a developer of silicon anode materials, reports that it has signed an MOU with an undisclosed Asia-based producer of high-purity silicon powder derived by recycling silicon by-product waste from solar photovoltaic cell and semiconductor manufacturing. The purpose, says NEO, is to significantly enhance price competitiveness of silicon anode materials for EV batteries by integrating… Read more »

This week’s webinar: A multi-physics approach to battery thermal management and runaway analysis

Thermal issues associated with the battery might affect its safety, reliability, lifetime, and performance. What if you can ensure the battery operates in safe temperature ranges while maximizing its performance, minimizing its degradation and avoiding hazardous conditions? Siemens offers an integrated battery design and thermal management workflow with multi-level modelling and multi-physics simulations. In this… Read more »

Electreon to deploy public wireless EV charging road in Germany

Electreon, a developer of wireless and in-road wireless EV charging technology, will deploy its technology in a public wireless road project in Germany, which will power a public electric bus. In collaboration with EnBW, a provider of EV charging infrastructure, Electreon will be deploying 1 km of Electric Road System (ERS) along a stretch of… Read more »

Kia EVs to use onsemi’s silicon carbide power module for traction inverters

onsemi has announced that its EliteSiC family of silicon carbide power modules has been selected for Kia’s EV6 GT model. onsemi says its power module enables high-efficiency power conversion from the DC 800 V of the battery to the AC drive for the rear axle. It also delivers package technology to minimize parasitics and thermal… Read more »

Solaris to supply Bucharest, Romania with 100 electric trolleybuses

Solaris, a Polish producer of public transport vehicles, has announced that the Romanian Municipality of Bucharest has executed a contract for 100 Solaris Trollino 12 trolleybuses, with a base contract value of nearly €60 million. The vehicles are expected to arrive in Bucharest at the end of 2024. Each 12-meter trolleybus is to be powered… Read more »

Rice University announces new process to revive lithium-battery anodes for reuse

Rice University scientists have reported what they believe to be a partial solution to the mounting disposal problem of worn-out lithium-ion batteries. It relies on a unique “flash” Joule heating process they have developed to produce graphene from waste. The lab of Rice chemist James Tour is said to have reconfigured the process to quickly… Read more »

Ultium Cells to expand battery production by 40 percent in Tennessee plant

Ultium Cells,  the battery cell manufacturing joint venture of LG Energy Solution and GM, plans to invest an additional $275 million in its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant to expand the facility’s battery cell output by more than 40 percent, from 35 GWh to 50 GWh. The company put $2.3 billion into the facility in April… Read more »
