SQM and Circulor partner to provide end-to-end lithium traceability for the EV battery supply chain

Traceability—the ability to document the sources of raw materials and components—is becoming a critical concern in the battery field as regulators incorporate country-of-origin requirements into new programs such as the EU Battery Regulation and the US Clean Vehicle Tax Credit. Now SQM (Sociedad Química y Minera), a major lithium producer, has announced a collaboration with… Read more »

Cummins tests new ePowertrain on track at Millbrook Proving Ground

Cummins, which  has been building diesel engines for heavy-duty vehicles since 1919, is methodically moving into the electric age. Now the company has successfully demonstrated a new ePowertrain for heavy-duty vehicles, using a test truck at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, England. The integrated 17Xe ePowertrain, developed by Meritor (now part of Cummins) with Advanced… Read more »

Magnis to supply US-processed graphite anode material to Tesla

Tesla has entered into a Binding Offtake Agreement with Australia-based Magnis Energy Technologies, “a vertically integrated lithium-ion battery technology and materials company,” for anode active materials (AAM).   Magnis is developing a graphite mine in Tanzania where it plans to extract “ultra-high-purity natural flake graphite.” Tesla plans to purchase at least 17,500 tons per year (tpa)… Read more »

Maserati’s first fully-electric car powered by three Marelli 800 V motors

Italian automotive supplier Marelli developed and manufactured the three e-motors used in the new Maserati GranTurismo Folgore, and also provided its proprietary Adaptive Driving Beam Matrix LED headlamps and Telematic Control Unit connectivity system. The 800 V motors, which were developed over a two-year span and produced at Marelli’s Modugno plant in Bari, Italy, supply… Read more »

KACO announces new bidirectional high-speed sealing systems for electric drives

German manufacturer KACO builds high-speed dynamic radial shaft sealing systems, and claims to have made a significant advance in the field. Electric drives, the company explains, require sealing systems that function independently of the direction of rotation, and previous systems had a preferred direction of rotation for forward travel (V-max), with correspondingly good reverse travel… Read more »

Multiphysics analysis of traction motors: accelerating innovation in EV solutions

EV designers must address an increasingly complex matrix of engineering goals on tightening timelines. Optimized system design requires evaluation of many different concepts, topologies, and electronic interactions across disciplines.  Considering the traction motor alone, there are several design decisions that impact the function of the entire vehicle. Engineers used to perform electromagnetic analysis in bits… Read more »

Lear to produce vehicle electrification subsystems at three Michigan sites

Lear, a manufacturer of automotive seating and electronic systems, plans to manufacture PACE battery disconnect units at its facility in Independence Township, Michigan, along with other vehicle electrification subsystems for batteries to be supplied to EV makers.
